What They Took With Them

Cate Blanchett performs the rhythmic poem ‘What They Took With Them’ alongside fellow actors Keira Knightley, Juliet Stevenson, Peter Capaldi, Stanley Tucci, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Douglas Booth, Jesse Eisenberg and Neil Gaiman.

The poem was written by Jenifer Toksvig and was inspired by stories and first-hand testimonies from refugees forced to flee their homes and items they took with them.

One of the sources for the poem was Brian Sokol’s photography project, ‘The Most Important Thing,’ made in collaboration with UNHCR. Many of Brian’s photos, along with firsthand accounts from the refugees he photographed, are featured in the film.

Released exclusively on Facebook, the film urges people to sign the #WithRefugees petition to help ensure refugees have the basics to build back their lives – an education, somewhere safe to live and the opportunity to work.

People speak up at the Climate Summit – #Climate2014

After one of the most inspiring experiences to march along the 400.000 people strong climate movement in NY city.. and to celebrate every photo, story and testimonial of the more than 2.000 solidarity actions held in over 160 countries over the weekend.

Today, more than 120 world leaders are at the United Nations Headquarters for the Secretary-General’s Climate Summit, to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our times!

Presidents, prime-ministers and all sorts of authorities gathered together to share commitments and pledge to take real action to solve this climate chaos.

But to kick off the debate, and remind all global leaders why we gathered here today, Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, from the Marshall Islands along with her beautiful family came to share some wise words filled with inspiration!

This was the message delivered by her today, which knocked all of the people at the General Assembly hall off their chairs, with a long and strong standing ovation!

I just hope that the leaders here will take on the words from Kathy, and deliver real, bold and ambition commitments and will walk the talk!

You can watch the Climate Summit live on webtv.un.org & follow the conversation on twitter #climate2014.

In the edges of #climatechaos, it’s about time we raise and #disrupt!

[EN] Around the world, people from all paths of life are gathering, organizing and taking the streets to put show global leaders we had enough!

We can no longer afford to passively wait and watch our homes flooding, crops disappearing and natural disasters becoming the norm, while they spend years discussing our future in air-conditioned rooms!

It is time to disrupt! And raise together to demand global leaders for real actions, instead of comforting words.

Check out the People’s Climate March website and learn about actions happening around your hood! And please, do get involved!!!! This is the greatest issue of our lifetimes and it gotta need all and each one of us to disrupt this climate chaos!

If you are not able to get out there, and join the over 2000 actions happening in over 160 countries. You must invest your time in learning more about the issue and informing your friends, your family and your community, a good start is the movie Disruption (by PF Pictures) just launched, which tells the story of the making of the march, as well as the global climate movement!

#Youth at the #Habitat3

Today, Martin Ulvestad Østerdal, from the Norwegian Children and Youth Council (LNU) delivered a statement on behalf of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth to the plenary meeting of the Habitat III PrepCom1 at the UN Headquarters in NY.

Martin reminded the delegates attending the PrepCom1 about the importance of engaging and listening to youth, children and future generations since they are the ones who will inherit this new habitat agenda being discussed, and will be directly affected by decisions taken today.

He also reminded us that in order to tackle the challenges we face today, we really will need a tailored and ambition new development agenda. The way we plan our existing cities and address the issue of new cities will determine what SDGs are fulfilled and who is left behind.

The agenda needs to go beyond its focus on just Urban, and focus on an agenda for human settlements everywhere, and it needs to be inclusive of everyone, specially women and young people.

Finally, Martin called attention of all the government delegations attending the PrepCom1 that Youth Participation must not be a one off event. That we can no longer accept hand picked youth participation discussing topics defined by others as youth issues. Youth participation needs to be representative, independent and with emphasis on the whole political process.

The new urban agenda needs to maximise our holistic human development and minimise our ecological footprint. And the only way to achieve that is through dialog, participation and partnerships with the people living in the city/ these places, including youth and children. Nothing about us without us.

It´s #WorldHumanitarianDay, and we must honour our #HumanitarianHeroes!

unnamed

Today, August 19th is the World Humanitarian Day!

It is a day to honour the selfless dedication of humanitarian workers around the world, and remember those #HumanitarianHeroes whom we have lost in the line of duty.

People just like me, and you, that decided to dedicate their lifes to make this world a better place, and that end up putting their lifes at risk while trying to make a difference.

Attacks against humanitarians are on the rise. Over the past decade, the number of aid workers killed in attacks has tripled, passing 100 deaths a year. Syria, Afghanistan, and South Sudan now rank as the most dangerous countries for humanitarian staff.

Enough is enough! #HumanitarianHeroes must be protected!

Today (10th of December!) is the International Day of the Human Rights!

And while this is a day to celebrate, still there are lots of things we need to improve.. daily the basic human rights of numerous people are violated or neglected. And this really needs to change!

First step to change that, is to know your rights! Your very on basic human rights, so you are able to keep governments and institutions accountable and to fight and ensure your rights and the rights of every individual in this planet is respected!

And to facilitate this “learning” process, UNOY – the United Network on Young Peace Builders produced an awesome video during their last Peace Advocacy Study Session in Budapest.

Know, Learnd and Understand your rights! Than raise you voice and speak Human Rights, in all the languages of the world!

Every voice counts!!!

Some barefeet inspiration…

Continuing with my posts about the wonderful treasuries of Africa… I want to share a little inspiration from Zambia today.

In my two years working with UNICEF in that country, I had the incredible pleasure of coming across a series of special people, and learn a bit more about their work and passion, constantly feeling re-charged with inspiration to continue my own work.

Some of those people I’ve been luck to come across and meet were Adam McGuigan, Tobias TemboTaonga Tembo, Ndala Bukola, Felix Chali, Michael and John Chanda and others that are part of an amazing group called Barefeet Theater Company..

Barefeet started as a few workshops with children living on the streets of Zambia but along the years has grown into one of the most exciting and inspiring projects I’ve personally came across!

They use Arts (theater, music, dance, etc) to inspire, empower and transform lives in Zambia, working with street kids from across the country, trying to build their confidence, and enable them to express themselves and to engage in building a better community.

But as an image speaks for thousand words… I would like to invite you to loose your shoes, and enjoy a bit of barefeet inspiration!

I guess there is no doubts that Africa has many treasures to be discovered still, but more than anything, we definitely have lots and lots to learn from incredible people like the Zambian Barefeet team!
