The #VideoGame that can open people´s eyes for #SouthSudan

Nowadays more and more people are into games, specially video games.

But also, a lot of those are filled with violence, shooting, bombs, and people doesn´t really seem to think it´s a problem. But what happens when it becomes reality!?

Or more, what happens when reality takes over the video game?

In an effort to raise awareness of the situation of children in South Sudan, UNICEF embarked on an unusual kind of campaign.

They sent an actor, a film crew and two South Sudanese youth to a major video game convention in Washington, D.C., and we were given a keynote address slot to pitch an exciting new video game to an audience of gaming enthusiasts.

The gamers in the room were real, as were their reactions and the footage that UNICEF captured for this short film.

In 2014, disasters and crises have affected children in many parts of the world. In South Sudan, which only a few years ago celebrated its independence, food crisis and conflict during the past year have had deadly consequences for children.

Raising awareness is just one step toward helping the children of South Sudan, who are living every day in a life-or-death situation, and it is not a game.

[EN] Today, Malala Yousafzai, is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize 2014, the youngest ever person to receive the award, n recognition of their shared courage and bravery in the struggle for education and children’s rights.

But also today, on International Human Rights Day, Malala issued an open letter to world leaders, asking them to raise their ambition in 2015. ‘This is our chance to commit to do better’, Malala says to world leaders in her letter ‘…I am issuing a call today to urge you to raise your ambition. If the right decisions are made and kept we could see the beginnings of a better future in 2015. A future of “lasts”, rather than half measures.’

The letter in english can be downloaded here: Malala´s letter in english

#Youth at the #Habitat3

Today, Martin Ulvestad Østerdal, from the Norwegian Children and Youth Council (LNU) delivered a statement on behalf of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth to the plenary meeting of the Habitat III PrepCom1 at the UN Headquarters in NY.

Martin reminded the delegates attending the PrepCom1 about the importance of engaging and listening to youth, children and future generations since they are the ones who will inherit this new habitat agenda being discussed, and will be directly affected by decisions taken today.

He also reminded us that in order to tackle the challenges we face today, we really will need a tailored and ambition new development agenda. The way we plan our existing cities and address the issue of new cities will determine what SDGs are fulfilled and who is left behind.

The agenda needs to go beyond its focus on just Urban, and focus on an agenda for human settlements everywhere, and it needs to be inclusive of everyone, specially women and young people.

Finally, Martin called attention of all the government delegations attending the PrepCom1 that Youth Participation must not be a one off event. That we can no longer accept hand picked youth participation discussing topics defined by others as youth issues. Youth participation needs to be representative, independent and with emphasis on the whole political process.

The new urban agenda needs to maximise our holistic human development and minimise our ecological footprint. And the only way to achieve that is through dialog, participation and partnerships with the people living in the city/ these places, including youth and children. Nothing about us without us.

Pacific Warrior Day of Action!

We are not drowning, we are fighting!

The warriors of Nukunonu, Tokelau show that they are fighting climate change. They’re not about to give up.

Today, the world had the opportunity to watch and get inspired by warriors from all over the Pacific Islands that got together to fight Climate Change!

While world leaders are talking, and selling out to corporate interests, the Pacific Islanders are watching the water wash their ancestors land away… and they had enough!

350 Fiji Maroroi Vuravura (Protect the Earth) Pacific Warrior Day of Action

They are not drowning without fighting! And the message was clear, and coming from all islands of the Pacific today! (Check some photo highlights of the Day of Action here!)

And it’s super exciting to see that warriors from around the world are coming together and speaking up in solidarity with our Pacific Islanders! Want to know who are the warriors jumping into this fight!?

Check out: http://350dotorg.tumblr.com/ And meet the common people, that just like our warriors had enough.. and decided to take on this fight against climate change!

Obviously, I’m also in this fight alongside with the Pacific Warriors!

Fighting alongside #Pacific Warriors against Climate Change.. all the way from Brazil!

What about you? What are you waiting to join us in this fight?!

How education on the 21st century looks like?!

If you know me, you probably know I go on and on about the role young people play (or should play) in deciding their own lives. While many agree we need to empower our youth, very little are ready to create the space and the opportunity for young people to take ownership over different aspects of their own lives.

In many previous posts, I’ve talked about youth-led development.. which is the idea of young people becoming equal partners in development processes that will shape their communities and consequently their lives…

But today I want to bring a question about youth-led education… Have you thought about what could happen if students would design their own schools!?

Sounds weird!? Maybe you should have a look at this!

“Education is not the filling of a pail, it’s the lightening of a fire!”

Do you speak human rights!?

Today (10th of December!) is the International Day of the Human Rights!

And while this is a day to celebrate, still there are lots of things we need to improve.. daily the basic human rights of numerous people are violated or neglected. And this really needs to change!

First step to change that, is to know your rights! Your very on basic human rights, so you are able to keep governments and institutions accountable and to fight and ensure your rights and the rights of every individual in this planet is respected!

And to facilitate this “learning” process, UNOY – the United Network on Young Peace Builders produced an awesome video during their last Peace Advocacy Study Session in Budapest.

Know, Learnd and Understand your rights! Than raise you voice and speak Human Rights, in all the languages of the world!

Every voice counts!!!
